Oil tank regulations in Ireland: what homeowners actually need to know

In Ireland, home heating oil tanks must be bunded (double-skinned) when they sit within certain distances of a building, boundary, drain or opening — the thresholds most installers work to come from the OFTEC OFS T100 standard and I.S. 3218-style guidance used across the trade.

In practice, on a typical suburban or rural plot, a new tank you install today will be bunded. Single-skin tanks are still legal in isolated situations, but insurers increasingly refuse to cover them and any future spill is on you.

The rule of thumb: 1.8 m from any non-fire-rated part of a building, 760 mm from a boundary, and clear of drains, gullies and manholes. A tank closer than that must be either bunded or protected by a masonry fire wall.

If your tank is being moved as part of an extension or driveway job, treat it as a new install — the distances apply again, not the old grandfathered position.

OFTEC is the Oil Firing Technical Association. Registered technicians work to their standards and can self-certify installations. It isn't a legal requirement to use an OFTEC-registered fitter, but it makes insurance claims, warranty registration and Building Control conversations much easier.
